My name is Islay Coppola, and as many of you will know by now, I’m a Clinical Canine Massage Therapist based in Edinburgh, offering fully mobile canine massage services across the Lothians and the Scottish Borders. Two years ago, I took the leap and started Coppola Canine Massage, and it’s been an incredibly rewarding journey ever since.

As a canine massage therapist, I believe that having a strong set of values is just as important as having good hands. These core values guide every decision I make for the dogs I’m privileged to support—whether they’re struggling with chronic pain from diseases like arthritis, recovering from injury, or simply slowing down 'with age'. They remind me why I started this path and help me stay grounded when things get tough. So, here’s a look at the values that drive me forward in the world of canine massage.

Value 1: Every dog has the right to live as comfortably as possible.

Just like us, dogs can experience pain and discomfort- and it can come from all sorts of places. Sometimes it’s sudden, like a sprain from rough play or a strain from sliding on slippy flooring. Other times, it creeps in gradually, showing up as stiffness or limping as part of a chronic condition like arthritis or hip dysplasia.

Whatever the cause, pain is pain. It’s uncomfortable, it affects quality of life, and it shouldn’t be ignored. I believe every dog has the right to live as comfortably and pain free as possible, and once discomfort appears, it deserves thoughtful attention and management- no matter how or why it started.

Value 2: Education is key to pain management.

I’m constantly learning- whether it’s attending workshops, studying new techniques, or diving into the latest research on canine muscular health. Why? Because I want to offer the most informed, up-to-date support I can to the dogs and owners I work with.

I love empowering owners with simple, practical advice they can use at home. Sometimes it’s just a small tip- like how to support a stiff hip during walks or manage energy levels in a sporting dog- but these small things often spark curiosity. Owners go on to read more, ask questions, and get more involved in their dog’s wellbeing. If someone walks away from a session with even one new bit of insight to help their, that’s a win in my eyes.

Value 3: Dogs are fantastic communicators who need to be heard.

A big part of my role is helping dogs “speak” when they’re in discomfort. They often don’t show pain in obvious ways, they are very secretive about their discomfort. Sometimes it’s just a slight hesitation, a shift in posture, or a subtle behaviour change. Over time, I’ve developed a finely tuned ability to spot these signs and identify soft tissue imbalances that may be contributing to their discomfort.

Usually, what I find aligns with what the owner’s already noticed—things that didn’t quite add up or felt hard to explain. That’s where my work really begins: translating a dog’s body language, behaviour, movement patterns and the feeling of their soft tissue into something we can act on.

But this process only works because of the people who know their dogs best. Without observant, caring owners, I wouldn’t be able to do my job as effectively. That’s why I believe that owners play a vital role in their dog’s health journey. They are their dog’s voice- and I aim to support and empower them every step of the way.

Staying Grounded, Staying True

These values are at the heart of every canine massage session I offer through Coppola Canine Massage. Whether I’m helping a senior dog find comfort, supporting a sporting dog through injury recovery, or simply improving comfort day to day, I come back to these guiding beliefs again and again. They keep me aligned, focused, and committed to providing meaningful, compassionate therapy. Providing canine massage with purpose throughout Edinburgh, Lothians and Scottish borders.
